10 Quotes Every Responsible Traveler Will Relate To

Most travel quotes are cliche, but this list of responsible travel quotes will encourage you to make a positive impact on your next trip!

For the most part, I think “travel quotes” are dreadfully cliche. I mean, am I the only one who is getting a little bit tired of seeing “not all who wander are lost,” plastered on literally anything and everything? I can’t be the only one. Regardless, I do appreciate quotes that make you think and encourage a positive impact – like these! Check out this list of quotes that every responsible traveler will relate to:

When you travel, remember that a foreign country is not designed to make you comfortable. It is designed to make its own people comfortable - Clifton Fadiman

This is actually the quote that inspired this entire post! It is the epitome of how I feel we should view the travel experience. When we travel, we become visitors in another country and another culture, and that requires a certain understanding and acceptance on our parts. While traveling is usually an incredibly exciting experience, sometimes it can be a little scary! But that’s when it is best to remember that wherever you are “is designed to make its own people comfortable.” Embrace that fact and experience a place in all of its beautiful authenticity and originality.

If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion and avoid the people, you might better stay home - James A Michener

This one is pretty self explanatory, yeah? To literally enter into a culture with judgements or reservations is not only pointless, but also not fair. Travel with an open mind and with the understanding that not everything will be catered to you. I promise it’ll make for a better experience anyway!

One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things - Henry Miller

One of my favorite things about traveling is quite literally, stepping into the shoes of those who live there. To become completely immersed in another culture and absorb every bit of it. Traveling takes us to a new geographic coordinates, yes, but it also takes us to a new way of life.

The more that I see, the less that I know for sure - John Lennon

I just love this perspective. Traveling makes you realize how much you didn’t know ever even existed! I think it’s really easy to get stuck inside our own personal bubbles and traveling is a great (if not the only) way to get out of them.

Certainly, travel is more than seeing the sights, it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living - Mary Ritter Beard

Whether you realize it or not in the moment, so much more is happening inside your mind than just taking in beautiful architecture or experiencing new flavors! It gives you a deeper understanding of how people live around the world and it will more than likely inspire you to adopt some of the new things that you learn!

Travel is not reward for working, it’s education for living

Some people use travel as reward for working, and that’s fine! There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. However, travel is a lot more than just a break from everyday life. And there are few things I hate more than being judged or shamed for choosing to spend my personal time and money on something I consider to be so important. Travel is without a doubt a (very important) form of education!

The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it - Robert Swan

It’s true! We can all make little changes, especially when traveling, that make a big impact. Check out my post on packing an eco-friendly toiletry bag for a great place to start!

Take only memories. Leave only footprints - Chief Seattle

Don’t be disruptive, don’t steal, don’t leave trash all over the place. Think about the little souvenirs that you’re buying and what you’ll actually do with them and where they’ll more than likely end up. Spend more time immersing yourself in your experience and you’ll leave with something money can’t buy – memories!

To travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries - Aldous Huxley

I can relate to this one on a ridiculous level, can anybody else? The weeks and months leading up to any trip that I made were always filled with questions, comments, and even warnings by people who had the most bizarre and outdated misconceptions of these places they’d never actually personally been. It was so frustrating to witness just how many people automatically assumed the worst about foreign countries, which is why its so important to go and experience it for yourself.

There isn’t a person you wouldn’t love if you could read their story

So this one, while it does apply to traveling responsibly, is also something I find I’m constantly reminding myself of in everyday life. You’ll more than likely encounter frustrating (for lack of a more intense, inappropriate word that begins with sh) people in your travels. People who are rude, people who may steal from you, etc. It sounds so cliche, but try and remind yourself that when these encounters happen, we’re only getting a tiny, tiny, picture of the whole story. We don’t know what happened in the beginning of their day, or the beginning of their life. Remember that when passing judgement about them!
